Being married to a marine for ten years, I am very familiar with the phrase: “pain is weakness leaving the body”. If that is the case, I have taken giant leaps towards being stonger this past few days. Every single inch of my body is screaming in agony as I push it towards a new lifestyle of physical fitness this week.
When I decided to be a wedding photographer, no one mentioned that besides attention to detail and artistic vision, physical endurance and stamina is crucial. Running after a spirited toddler on a two hour session is a piece of cake compared to the activity level involved in a wedding.
Some things I do at a wedding:
Stand for ten hours straight in professional attire.
Hold steady a heavy camera with an even heavier lens and flash for ten hours straight while I squat, sprint, climb step-stools, etc.
Charmingly command the attention of large groups.
Hug and comfort the bride about the weather, the flower girl throwing a tantrum, or mom being overbearing, all while holding my camera, lens, and flash.
Shed a tear while the bride and groom exchange vows.
Adhere to a super-strict schedule.
Make more jokes.
Some things I don’t do at a wedding:
Sit, unless you count quick bathroom breaks.
Eat anything more than a granola bar.
Put my camera down.
Granted, I passionately love what I do, and adrenaline is known to pump us humans and do things that we never thought possible. Thank God for adrenaline! But the day after a wedding I found myself useless, tired, and sore. I also reached that magical age when you can no longer eat a McDonalds happy meal and a tub of Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey without paying the consequences. So I dusted off my old P90X DVD collection and have been torturing my body for the past three days in unfathomable ways.
Some things I can do today:
Wake up from pain every time I change positions while sleeping.
Wimper if I have to reach up to put the dishes away in my kitchen cabinets.
Walk like a duck.
Scream if my daughter jabs her elbow in my stomach
Some things I can’t do today:
Go down the stairs.
Get up from bed without employing my hands, elbows, and every physical effort known to man.
Put on my pants while standing.
Not walk like a duck.
I did consider milder ways to start an exercise regime, and even now I wonder if that wouldn’t have been the safer way. But P90X has never let me down in the past, and with wedding season just around the corner, I want results. By releasing my intentions out to the cyber world, I am no longer alone in my quest for health and fitness, no longer allowed to fail or come up with excuses, this blog post holds me accountable.
So cheers to the pain that shall make me a stronger photographer!
