I love it when one of my sweet nice couples refer to me their equally nice friends. Brittany, Justin and I hadn’t officially met in person before their engagement session today, and I was so glad to find that we hit it off immediately and had an absolute blast.

The chemistry between these two is off the charts! As I uploaded their images from our time together and worked them, I couldn’t help but feel the sparks flying between them.

Brittany and Justin: Thank you so much for allowing me to orchestrate and document this celebration of your commitment to each other, and be witness to your bond. Keep holding on to one another tight!

We started at the field where Justin coaches football. After a lot of persuasion, he has finally turned his better half into a Missouri fan…

Brittany you looked so cute in your Missouri University tee it’s not even funny. :)

I believe the following set is my favorite:

Then they glammed it up several notches for some shots out on the town.

There is more! View the complete slideshow of Brittany and Justin here.

When I was working in Miami last month I photographed this beauty and her session just never made it into my blog.

I had so much fun working with Marla. She is seventeen and one of the most happy, genuine people I know. Us cubans do this huge celebration when a girl turns fifteen; it represents a coming of age, and entering society as a lady. A huge part of this tradition is a photo shoot in a formal, princess-like gown and other fashionable outfits. How fun is that?!

Life got in the way for Marla around her fifteenth birthday. So here we are, two years later, catching up with tradition and having a blast while doing it. The plus side is less pressure to perform. At seventeen Marla has an amazing outlook in life and a real knack for letting go and having the time of her life, even if her heels are killing her.

The small bridal cottage at Meadowlark Gardens was a whirlwind of garment bags, feminine laughter and floral perfume as I returned from photographing the groom and his family. “West is dying to see you” I told Meagan and her mega-watt smile beamed unabashedly, and nervously. The day was racing up to this moment when they would see each other in private for the first time. Trying to approach it calmly, delaying it almost an impossibility. Meagan and West are so drawn to each other, almost magnetically. This energy permeated through their first look, and their beautiful wedding this past weekend. Looking back through the photos I could feel it in every image. The way they look at each other just radiates love.

Here is a small peek into their day…

I have so much respect and admiration for love that lasts a lifetime.

This past weekend I photographed my good friend’s parents who are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary very soon. These images are pure beauty to me. They are so happy, and at peace, living a life surrounded by kids and grandkids who adore them. I wanted their session to reflect this stage in their lives. Here are my favorites…

Whether you are a bride about to walk down the aisle, have an upcoming engagement photo shoot, or your are attending a wedding this year, many of us feel clueless when it comes to posing and looking our best in photographs. You do not have to be 5’9” and 130 lbs to look fabulous in your wedding photos. As a professional photographer I can assure you that for every great photo of a model you see in a magazine, there were twenty or more not-so great images, and the ones that make the final cut went through extensive retouching and Photoshop maneuvering to eliminate blemishes, bulges, and enhance the model’s features. You can look absolutely ah-mazing on your photos by following a few simple tips and letting your photographer create magic :)

Face

  • The #1 piece of advice I can give all brides or anyone about to have a major photo shoot is to have your hair and make-up done by a professional. These people are trained specifically to know facial structure and color theory to compliment your natural beauty. Most reputable hair stylists and make-up artist can do a complimentary trial run so you can rehearse your look before the important date.

  • Do your hair in a way that looks elegant and polished, yet it is not a complete departure from your every day look. Remember you are supposed to feel confident and beautiful. Ditch super-rigid or slicked back do’s or tight, corkscrew curls in favor of soft, silky waves and more relaxed up do’s. Avoid an over-abundance of mousses and sprays that can weigh your hair down and make it look stiff and unnatural.

  • Use enough makeup to enhance your features, without overwhelming them.

  • Go for foundations that have a yellow or beige-tinted base rather than a pink base. We all have some yellow or beige in our skin and choosing foundations in this color gamut gives us a healthy glow, while pink foundations cast a dull, unhealthy look to our complexion.

  • Avoid overly-glittery shadows and lip glosses, especially if your event is in daylight, these can make you look garish and reflect light unfavorably. Go for soft shimmery or matte shadows and lipstick instead. Another reason to use lipstick rather than gloss, the latter seems to be a magnet for loose strands of hair at the most inopportune times, like while saying your vows. Stay away from lip liner that is darker than your lipstick and use a nude liner to keep color from bleeding into your skin instead.

  • Line and define your eyes with a soft liner or dark shadow; brown, plum or navy look best. Stay away from black as it can look too severe, unless you are going to a rock concert :)

  • Blend, blend, blend the contours.

  • If your wedding is outdoors, keep your makeup as natural as possible.

  • Avoid alcohol the night of and before your wedding, it can make you look flushed and make your skin and eyes look tired, and your body bloated. Instead, drink plenty of water during the two days prior to the big day and get rest. They call it beauty sleep for a reason ;)

Posing for the camera

  • Posture is crucial. Stand up straight; it takes pounds and years off your appearance. Wearing heels has a very positive effect on posture; they automatically straighten your back and help you look more streamlined and elegant.

  • Turn at about a 45 degree angle to the camera, with your weight on the front leg. Bend your front knee slightly in front of your other leg and relax into this stance. Give your arms something to do that bends them at the elbow, like holding your bouquet or placing your hand on the groom’s chest.

  • Tilt your head sideways ever-so-slightly while pushing your chin out and down SLIGHTLY. This eliminates double chins and gives your face a flattering angle.

  • Don’t smile ALL the time, you will end up with a frozen, artificial expression and your face will start shaking after about half an hour of doing this, trust me, it has happened to me. Some of the most beautiful, dramatic, and emotive photographs are of peaceful, relaxed brides. Part your lips very slightly or for a natural smile, think of your last romantic date with your beloved.

  • And the most important thing: RELAX, you are at your most beautiful and this is a fun experience! If you feel stressed or nervous, try this: close your eyes, and take a deep breath by inhaling while counting to three, and exhaling for six counts. I call this, smelling the roses, and blowing out the candles. Repeat for as long as necessary. It calms you nerves and leaves you feeling reenergized.

Practice these posing tips in front of the mirror several times. On your wedding day you may not remember this article, but standing and smiling for the camera will be more familiar if you have practiced. I offer lots of guidance and direction during a photo shoot, and I tailor and stylize the shots specifically for the couple I am working with, so no two images are the same, but knowing these basic tips will help you feel more confident while being photographed.

Next week’s article will focus on different photography styles and how to choose a wedding photographer. I will also be having several featured guest bloggers about other aspects of planning your wedding. Stay tuned!

Two snow/ice falls so far this winter… yipeee! The most we’ve had since we moved to Georgia. This morning I decided to pay a small tribute to photography master Ansel Adams, and I ventured out in the ice to get some black and white shots of our humble winter wonderland. So bundled up in my coziest winter gear (that still didn’t do the job, blame it on being a hot-blooded latina) I went for a walk crossing my fingers that I wouldn’t slip on the ice and shatter my lens.

There something about walking alone in the snow that is so peaceful. It has an appeal of its own. The birds have left their homes, the streets are isolated. The only sound resonating in my ears was the crunchy layers of ice swooshing under the weight of my rubber boots; and the now bare, skinny tree branches shivering when kissed by the icy rushes of wind. It’s like the world, nature is holding it’s breath in awe of its own beauty. I smiled the entire way (ok, I smiled about half the time, and the rest of the time I held my scarf over my numb face) and I came back home energized.

They say the more you like someone, the prettier they become in your eyes. When I uploaded this session  to my computer I was  fascinated by the cuteness quotient of this brother and sister. These kids have become very dear to our family. They are close friends with my daughters and the foursome is together sometimes almost every day;  they are practically part of our family.

It was unusually warm this afternoon for a New Year’s Eve and we took advantage by ditching our jackets and kicking off our shoes, letting our toes have a feast on the wet grass. I am glad to enjoy this little bout of nice weather before the frigid temps coming in the next two months.

Here are my favorites. Enjoy your sneak peek guys!

And this is the last blog post / session of 2010! What an amazing year this has been! A year of change, good change. I am so excited to see what 2011 brings, I have a feeling it’s going to be the best year ever!

Happy 2011 to all. May you always be blessed with love, health, and abundance :)

Yesterday, someone very close to me called to tell me they had received a check for just enough to pay an outstanding debt that was about to go to collection and they had been stressing about. This is someone who has gone through a rough time, and doesn’t have the strongest faith. This friend’s words to me were: “He truly gives you exactly what you need when you need it. It’s incredible, He never abandons us and is always bailing us out.” :)

This incredible Source that we call God, our source of love, faith, hope, and everything else good, is limitless in His generosity. Thousands of years ago tomorrow, we received the greatest gift of all from His greatness, an extraordinary Son to bring us closer to Him and remind us of that goodness that still prevails in our hearts, of the awesomeness we are capable of, and the bountiful universe we live in, one of unlimited resources. A light to remind us of where we come from, what we are part of, and where we are going.

Tomorrow morning when my kids’ eyes sparkle as they open their presents I will smile and my heart will jump with joy. This is the best time of the year… a season of giving, a celebration of generosity, of the plentiful world we live in. Although we give more love, give more food, give time, and give presents, the more we give, the fuller our cup is, we never run out. And for that gift, I thank you Lord.

Cheers to giving!

I had an amazing photo session with these two lovebirds yesterday! Not only are they are drop-dead-gorgeous couple but also so sweet and FUN! I couldn’t help but include some of our funny outtakes amongst the pretty shots. It was extremely difficult to narrow it down to just a few because they were honestly all fabulous so forgive me for the length of this post :)

The setting is Hotel Palomar, one of my favorites in midtown Atlanta. Their modern yet inviting decor is breathtaking and the staff is top notch. This would be my choice of wedding venue if I were getting married in the city today; an intimate yet sophisticated retreat. The Hotel Palomar can accomodate up to 500 guests for cocktails and 370 for dinner. Catering is provided by their own Pacci Ristorante, which produces mouth-watering american and italian cuisine elegantly presented. For more information about having your wedding at this to-die-for venue please click on this link.

The exquisite gown is a Jasmine Haute Couture creation courtesy of Etain Bridal Boutique located in Ashley Park in Newnan. Etain offers a large and varied collection of designer bridal gowns in the South Atlanta area, but most important of all, they are NICE :) and down to earth. The ladies at Etain are committed to providing a personalized experience in finding and purchasing the most important gown you’ll ever wear. They also offer upscale mother of the bride, bridal party, and prom gowns.

Now on to my faves from yesterday:

Don’t quite remember what started this…

Soooo romantic…

This one makes me smile~
